Chapter5

Cherish was drinking a cup of coffee when she heard the trailer pull away. She pulled open the gauzy curtains on the farmhouse windows and looked out to confirm what she’d already guessed. Lily was leaving and she was taking the trailer with her.

Cherish leaned her forehead against the cool pane of the glass. She wished Lily well, she really did. Cherish still felt a pang of guilt over having stolen Kyle away from Lily, but stronger than that was the feeling of blissful happiness she got every time she thought about Kyle. She’d been walking on cloud nine ever since Kyle had told her he loved her. For the first time in her life, she was beginning to see how her life might actually work out.

“Hey, babe.” Kyle smelled like soap as he kissed her on the cheek. “You’re up early.”

“I work at the thrift store today.” Cherish loved her job at the thrift store. She got to spend all day looking at all the old things people brought in and the owner let her bring in Trevor, so she got to spend the day with her baby as well as her job.

Kyle wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her cheek. Cherish snuggled back against his chest. Bliss.

“Is that Lily leaving?” Kyle asked.

Cherish’s bliss slipped a little. She knew Kyle had chosen her but she couldn’t shake the feeling that she’d stolen him. Besides, he and Lily had history, a lot of it. What if this was just a fluke and he changed his mind and went right back to Lily?

“Is she mad?” Cherish asked. They hadn’t talked much about what had happened between him and Lily, just that it had ended.

“I think we both knew it was over,” Kyle said. “We haven’t been getting along for a while now.”

Cherish watched the dust cloud that the trailer kicked up behind it as Lily drove down the unpaved driveway toward the road. She wondered if Lily even knew where she was going right now.

“Did you tell her to take the trailer?”

Kyle snorted. “No, but I’m not going to stop her. It was her idea.”

“Speaking of which,” Cherish could see the shadow of the monstrous construction project that was the new house Kyle had been building for Lily. “What’s going to happen to the house?” Cherish loved this farmhouse she’d moved into when she’d first come here, but the house was already half built. Tearing it down would be more work than finishing it at this point.

“Last time I talked to the construction crew, they said it’s not too late to make some changes. What about if we go through it today and decide what we want?”

A fizzle of excitement sparked in Cherish’s stomach. She hadn’t thought she wanted the house, but spending time with Kyle and planning their future together appealed to her. “Okay. Do you have time before I go into work?” Cherish finished off the last of her coffee.

Kyle kissed her cheek. “Whatever you want.”

Cherish smiled and sighed as she rested her head against his strong shoulder.
